My teaching approach

Ever since different languages have existed we have had the need to learn and speak them to be able to communicate to people. Knowing languages open doors for cultural exchange, travelling, getting better jobs and of course for communicating.

 Many theories about how we learn and teach languages have been produced and studied, some of them tell us about how to learn the language itself (reading and writing) and others how to be able to communicate (Listening, speaking, reading and writing) in that language.

As English is one of the most spoken languages in the world there is a need for people to learn it and speak it, and of course, on how to teach it.

Now, the big question is? How do we teach English to people so they are able to communicate and undertand the language?

Well, there have been many methods created for teaching and learning English and although they may differ, one thing they all have in common it’s that they all have to be thought by a teacher, who takes and very important role in the process of learning the language.

First, let’s talk about some of the methods use in teaching English and the aims or goals and the role of the teacher and then let’s create our own teaching English method.


Grammar translating method

_Teaching and learning goals & areas of language and skills emphasized.

  _Reading and writing are primary skills

  _Students are taught to translate for one language to another.

  _Little attention are given to speaking , listening and pronunciation.

_Organization of the syllabus

  _Primarily based on the grammatical points explicitly taught.

_Teacher and students roles & interaction conditions

  _The teacher is the authority in the classroom.

  _There is little student-student interaction.

  _If the students do not know the answer, the teacher give it to them.

_Characteristics of teaching-learning process. Evaluation

  _Students study grammar through rules and examples

  _Memorizing native language for equivalent to target language

  _Language used in the class is native language

  -Oral production is not tested



  _Students are evaluated on correctness, no on their progress. Errors are badly tolerated.

_Direct method (Berlitz)

 _Teaching and learning goals & areas of language and skills emphasized

  _Listening, speaking, reading and writing

  _The purpose of the language is communication

  _Students learn how to think in the target language

  _L2 is the only language in the classroom

  _Vocabulary is emphasized over grammar

  _Pronuntation receives attention since the beginning

  _Teachers direct the class and interact with the students

  _Students converse with one another.

  _The teacher gets the students to self correct.

  _Teachers introduce new target language by demonstrating its meaning by picures or pantomime

  _Students speak in the target language and communicate as in real situations

  _Teaching and learning goals & areas of language and skills emphasized

  _ The purpose is communication

  _Students need to learn the target language without stopping to think

  _Skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing and oral skills get  all the attention

  _Vocabulary is kept to the minimum while students master the sound and the grammatical patterns.

  _L2 is the only language in the classroom

  _The teacher is a good model for imitation

  _Students imitate the teacher and follow directions and respond as accurately and rapidly as possible.

  _The student-student interaction is directed by the teacher.

  _Students errors are to be avoided by the teacher awareness of students difficulties

  _Vocabulary and structural patterns are presented by dialogues.

  _Students accurate responses are positively reinforced

  _Grammar is introduced by examples given, grammar rules are not provided

_Callan method

  _The method aims to get students to speak, holding their attention and stimulating their memory.

  _Not learn about the language but on how to use it

  _Priority to conversation, the objective students gain confidence and start speaking in English from the very beginning

  _Grammar and vocabulary are acquired through repetition. A lot of attention is paid to pronutation

  _Its a program based on instructions divided into twelve stages

  _Contains a list of grammar and vocaburary items in a question answer format

  _The teacher is the executor of the method. Students are not allowed to omit or change a single sentence

  _Interaction between students take place at the beginning and end of the class

  _Students should not get away with the tiniest mistake

  _Teacher introduce new target language through pictures or pantomime. No translation

  _Target language as in real situations. Dialogue formula answer-answer-question-answer at a very high speed 50 questions per hour. Repetition

  _Lessons consist of 3 blocks; 1 listen and speak; 2repeat and retain; 3Read and write

_Teacher monitor progress through speed an accuracy, but evaluation is done to exams that are correctec by the students.





Here we have explain some of the methods use for learning English. They are all have have the same goals, but the process of learning and teaching and the results are different.

In my opinion the main reason students have when they decided to learn the language is to be able to communicate, and as we have seen in the different methods that is not always achieved.

So, which is the perfect method to acquiring a language? Children acquire a language by communicating and repeating  words  before they can actually spell them or write them or understand the grammatical use of them. That is why this will be our priority.

We need emphasized the productive skills which are listening and speaking over receptive skills, reading and writing.

To gain this the teacher will need to interact with the students, get  them involve in conversations that might be of interest to them, such us, newspaper head lines, sports, fashion etc, you can use this by introducing some target language. But remember that this should always be done in L2 language never translation.

Also you have to remember  it’s not the same to teach S1 students than P3. The syllabus that might work for S1 such as games, pictures or drawings might not work for P3. That’s why the teacher should always  know the needs of the students. The teacher should ask the students the reason for learning English, if the have studied before and what experience they have had about, do they speak English at work etc. By asking this you will be more aware of the needs of your students.

Simplicity its always the key to learn a language, before we actually get involve in complicated grammar sentences we need to speak  it, that’s why we should keep simple.

Always give clear instructions, keep it simple and repeat it, the teacher should know the level of the students and prepare the class accordingly.

As I have said before the teacher plays a big role in the class and therefore has to :

_Guide them on how to learn and communicate

_Advice and clear doubts related to English language

_Organize the class time and controls de execution of the activities

_Brings linguistic knowledge to the learners

_A teacher it’s a playmaker, his or her role its very important but her talk has to be discrete- The teacher guides but it’s the student who has to score the goal

_A psychologist. Sometimes you have to deal with difficult students and revert their reaction to learn

_Agony Ant. Sometimes students have problems and they want to share them with you, we have to listen

_Conversationalist.  Nothing its more effective than a good topic for conversation.

Lets develop a method that in my opinion will help students to learn English in an enjoyable way.

  _Teacher introduce new target language demonstrating its meaning trough realistic samples, pictures etc to associate them without translation.

  _Students get to speak the target language as in real situations

  _The traditional book disappears and grammar its taught inductively

  _Given vocabulary by using new words in sentences

  _Teacher evaluate students by demonstrating their knowledge and praise them if necessary


Well, after having read some of the different methods of teaching English language I think that the main goal is to make people speak the language as good as possible so they can communicate and reach their personal goals in the most enjoyable way possible.

And the aim of the teachers is to reach this goal. Then we will be rewarded
