MY TEACHING APPROACH

English language is a West Germanic Language that originated from Anglo fristan dialect. English by far is the most spoken language around world. Hence it’s a key communicating tool for business, schooling, and traveling.

Teaching English language is not as easy as it looks. I used to think since I was native, teaching English would be a piece of cake, all i had to is teach my student to speak, Oh how wrong I was. As an English teacher you need more than just been able to speak fluently, you need to a plan. A method a way of impacting this knowledge into your student systematically and organised. It’s necessary you have a strong comprehension of the language grammatically and structure wise.

Languages are learnt for various reasons, to open business doors, for studying, for a whole lot of essential reasons, also been able to communicate in that language that is been learnt. Different approaches and methodologies have been researched in the view of language learning, what I think is methods and approaches varies in application, because students are not all the same. In the Grammar Translation Method, also called the traditional method, the grammatical rules are learnt in this method and how to apply them by translating it into the native language. It was assumed that translation was an academic exercise; this method teaches the student about the target languages instead of actually teaching them the target language and how to use it. While in Direct Method also known as the oral method originated around the 1900s as an alternative to the traditional grammatical translation method. At this time teachers were starting to experiment with teaching and educational models as previous techniques were failing to improve spoken communication. This method focuses mainly on vocabulary, I personally will use this method to teach little kids that are just learning and starting to speak. It’s communicative for a beginning kid student.

Furthermore, I realise a little of everything is what makes the fun. Just like in the Oxbridge method, getting the student to participate as much as possible is the aim. Since language is a means of communication, then its only right for the learning process to be as communicative as it can be in other to achieve the communication goal, this is why i think i wouldn’t use the grammar translation method as a bases of my teaching approach. It will definitely be a part of it but in a more fun and communicative manner and the usual traditional formal way. The Oxbridge’s triangular method is a fun way to get your students learning all aspect of the language formation without them even realising it. The grammar, vocabulary and the topics that serve an avenue to get them talking and using the target languages as effortlessly as possible.

As a teacher, my student’s needs are my primary concern, hence my lesson plan will be channelled to help and suit each level according to needs and ability of my students. Building the four senses is the main focus, through activities that makes not only a learning process but a fun learning process that will get the student to respond, a happy class makes a happy student and a happy student makes the learning even better and faster. For beginners, vocabulary should be made the priority. The student will learn the most basic of the everyday situations and also cognates will work fine at this level. Words that have the same meaning and spellings are easy for a beginner to guess and master. Getting them to understand the language is the priority, through role playing, games and other fun activities that focuses on the target language.
