My teaching approach

My personal approach to teaching English.

Each society in a certain historical moment has its own way to define its vision of life at that particular  moment in time. Communication has always been one of the basic needs of human society throughout history and the transmission of knowledge was one of the main components. Through comunication people could share their ideas and progress through art, technique and knowledge.

I would say that teaching is the creation of a link between different languages in order to create language between people and to spread culture. On the basis of this idea various methodologies were developed and schools and universities were born throughout history and knowledge was set as a base of power.

Nowadays we live in a society where we have more freedom and needs to move around the world and constantly to learn languages.

Every person or student is different. Students may have different needs, motivation and goals to learn a language. Some learn English because it is necessary to use at work, some want to move abroad, others for socializing, and also learning just for fun.

Knowing the purposes of the student, why they want to learn English and understanding how student learn are key in order to set up the right class/ course for the student.

It is important to know who the student is and have the students engaged. As a teacher I would pay attention to the students needs. I consider the student’s background, culture, learning style and affective factors as very important elements that can influence the way of learning and affect them to reach the goal. As every student have a different ways of learning, taking into account Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory, the information can be useful to understand students attitude in class through responses and stimuli. It may help the teacher to understand  students for example to adapt the types of activities to their learning style. Having this knowledge, is beneficial for the teacher in order to follow report and meet goals effectively.

Building rapport is a good way to motivate students. Motivating student can starts just by remembering students name. Another is way  to show interest in them making the class more personal by telling stories, which will make the student engage. A positive attitude can totally change a dynamic of the class. Students will enjoy the class much more when a teacher transmits a positive attitude.

A positive approach towards correcting will be benificial for the dynamic of the class as well. As correction is fundamental when teaching a language it is important to find a positive way of correction. Letting the student self-correct as much as posible so they can learn from theirselves. Student should experience the correction of the teacher more as a support to develop themselves than thinking they are making many mistakes.

When acquiring a language, language skills are important to consider; speaking, listening, reading and writing. Speaking is one of the most important skills in English language teaching. Speaking is vocalization of human communication.

I consider speaking and listening as essential and the skills writing and reading as important. Speaking and listening may be the most benificial skill of all four skilss whether student is beginner or advanced. Being able to express an idea concept or opinion through speech is essential in the communicative process.

Writing and reading are skills are important and should still be a part of teaching English in class but for example with less time can be spent on it.

Language areas are Grammar vocabulary, pronunciations and spelling are micro skills. As a teacher, I rather teach grammar in an inductive way than the deductive way. Student are able to participate and create their own thoughts on how the grammar rule is set up. Also interaction gives a positive dynamic to the activity. However I also believe that rules, patterns, principles can be included too. The deductive way I would use to support the inductive way in when necessary.

Examples grammar activities are students working in pairs to create dialogs. They use the taught grammar to ask eachother questions at and anwers  using the grammar and target language of the lesson. The objective of the activity is to have students to communicate with eachother using the grammar in an accurate way.

Vocabulary can be taught in various ways. Teaching vocabulary in themes is a good way of help the student to remember them. Each time a certain amount of vocabulary should be taught only and mostly vocabulary that is related to real life situations. Using memory games is a way to help student to remember and extend their vocubulary of a specific theme. The objective is that student remember words that are related to the discussed theme and to use them in different activities.

Pronunciation is a skill that should monitored and taught from the start. As speaking is one of the important skills, pronunciations needs to be practiced too to gain the clarity of being understood.

Learning spelling helps to cement the connections between the letters and the sounds. Spelling tend to be a direct result of the phonology of English. Word sounds in Spanish as they are spelled and they are spelled like they sound. In English this is clearly not the case.

Examples for to practice pronunciation is to teach a topic. That can be a recent article from a newpaper, recent events ar any theme that may interest the student. The objective is to get the student to speak with fluency or accuracy.

The vehicular language in class must be only the language the student is learning. This will stimulate students to practice the language and do the effort to use the language when they want to speak.

The Direct Method aims to teach the foreign language without using the mother tongue. Idioms, phrases and words are taught through context and explanations in the foreign language only.

As a teacher I think it is essential that students know they are free in other aspects. Each student is an individual and they all have another role in class. Student should know they are free to participate in class unregarded the role(e.g. imitator, a passive learner, a communicator or a self-manager) One objective they may have in common from the teachers point of view and approach. That would be the attitude of a self-manager. I will guide the learner as much as possible to use initiative and take responsibility for their learning. They select manage and assess their own learning activities. They work collaboratively in classroom with my guidance.

As students are expected to be self managers, assessments should include self assessments of students. This will help the students to develop and improve themselves since they are reflecting and judging about their own proficiency. It can can compliment the assessment done by the teacher. Teacher should assess the students as well, depending on the type of course or the number of students in class. Considering a small group of students, I favour the formative way of assessments. It gathers information on how much the student has learns and what their strengths and weaknesses are. These assessments are very useful to keep track of the students performance and progress during the course. It will give very specific information that allows to improve activities, materials, methods and to create a future plans.

I believe a good teacher has several roles. A good teacher is flexible and is capable to adapt their approach in many situations. One of the important roles is the needs analyst at the very beginning. The teacher analyses what the students needs are in order to set goals and create a suitable course for the student. Once to get to know the student the teachers role can be also a psychologist. The reactions and stimuli of the students are monitored in order to adapt the class to achieve goals. Another teacher role that complement a good teacher is the guide. The teacher guides and directs the class dynamics. The teacher knows the goals and where the students are going. The guidance will help the students achieving the goals.

There are differences between teaching beginners and advanced students and it is important to take into consideration. For beginner levels grading  language is more important than accuracy. Whereas teaching advanced students the focused would be more on accuracy and fluency. The Audio-lingual method may come more across for beginners to support the inductive ways. Drilling can be good for higher level students with a great level of fluency to achieve excellent accuracy.

Age of the student is an element to take into account. Teaching a group of young students like children and teenagers is not the same as teaching  a group of adults. Children have other motivations and are generally more active.Structure and clear rules in class are key. It requires  not only a well prepared class but also excellent classroom management in order to keep them engaged and reach the goals.

Choosing the right material and activities to work with students that interest them. Teaching children throughout games, videos or other fun activities, will keep them engaged. When it comes to teaching young children, the teachers role has more a role of an instructor. The teachers teaches the children by instructing them. The language teaching method Total Physical Response method  instructors give commands to students in the target language, and students respond with whole-body actions. This method is very popular to teach children at beginner and elementary level.

My conclusion of the essay is that there is not just one method to teaching English. As a teacher I take the role as an analyst, a psychologist and a guide focussing on the students need. As a teacher I should be flexible, be able to adapt to the students and tailor the class that suits a student the best. This includes selecting the right techniques and choosing appropriate materials to teach and reach the goals.
