I am able to understand English

Be able to is not a modal auxiliary verb. We include it here for convenience, because it is often used like "can" and "could", which are modal auxiliary verbs.

Structure

subject + be + able + infinitive

Be able to can be used with all tenses:

  • I am able to drive.....

  • I was able to walk.....

  • I will be able to practice English.....


Able is used to express ability. Able is an adjective and it means having the power, skills to do something. Able is used like CAN to express ability. 

I can dance - I am able to dance

But remember: Able can be used with all tenses whereas CAN is only used in the present.

CAN and COULD have no infinitive form CAN to COULD to

  • I can to play the guitar (Incorrect)

  • I can play the guitar (correct)

  • I am able to play the guitar (Correct)


I am able to play football

I will be able to go to work
