What is there in the classroom?

There IS a table... There is a chair... there ARE windows! There IS a ceiling!

 

 

There is/There are - used to indicate that something is in a certain location or that something ‘exists’.

There is – singular noun

There are – plural nouns

The main subject follows the verb when there is/are is used.

Contractions are used in informal speech

• There’s a pen on the table.


• There’re magazines on the floor.

We also use there is for uncountable nouns/items.

• There IS money in my bag.


• There IS sugar in the kitchen.

Questions:

• Is there a chair in the room?


• Are there students in the classroom?


• Is there are a window there?

Formula: Verb + Subject + Object

Negative:

• There isn’t (is not) a car on the road.


• There aren’t a lot of people in the party.

We use the there when we want to say something in general.

• There are pens on the table.


• There are balls in the stadium.
