Tag questions can be difficult, can't they?

P4 - tag questions

Use: Tag questions are used to verify if a statement is true or not. Something we use them in a sarcastic tone to make a strong point.

Tag Questions: A tag question is a short question added to the end of a positive or negative statement.

  • You are from Spain, aren't you?

  • You like music, don't you?

She is. isn't she?

He isn't. is he?

They are. aren't they?

They will. Won't they?

A positive statement is followed by a negative tag

+                              -

You are tired, aren't you?

A negative statement is followed by a positive tag

-                                   +

You're not Spanish, are you?

Remember:

The statements are always separated by a comma (,)

The verb in the statement should be the same verb in the tag question

  • He is right, isn't he?

  • They will do it, won't they?

  • I am early, aren't I ?

If the statement doesn't have an auxiliary verb then the auxiliary 'do' is used

  • He finished the project, didn't he?

  • She eats fish, doesn't she?

  • He had a chocolate cake, didn't he?
