Who.......That......Which



Confusing relative pronouns...so let's find out how to use them!

  • WHO refers to people

  • THAT refers to groups or things

  • WHAT refers to groups or things


Examples:

  • Mary is the one who cried.

  • Barcelona is the team that won the Champions League.

  • The house, which is painted red, has just been sold.


RULE number 2

That introduces essential clauses while which introduces nonessential clauses.

Example:

  • Gems that sparkle often elicit forgiveness.

  • Diamonds, which are expensive, often elicit forgiveness.
