Suffixes are groups of letters added to the end of other words to make new words. When a suffix is added to a word it changes the expression. The suffixes er and est are added to adjectives or describing words to compare things.

So what is the rule with most v suffix 'est'?

  • Most is used it when

  • 'est' is used

Do you know any words that end with the suffix 'est? Think of as many as possible

  • Hardest

  • fastest

  • shortest

Remember:

The suffix er should be used when you are comparing two things.

  • Peter is shorter than John.

The suffix est should be used when you are comparing more than two things.

  • English is the hardest subject in School.

Words that end with an 'e' should be dropped and simply add est or er at the end

  • She arrived later to the party.

For two-syllable words ending in y (happy), the y is replaced with i, before adding the suffix est.

  • Marie is the happiest person I know.

For one-syllable words - fat - the end is repeated Fattest

  • That is the fattest bird I have ever seen.
