Is graffiti vandalism or street art?

  • Madrid has witnessed an increasing amount of Graffiti in the city recently.

  • TAGS – are the names given to the graffiti we see – they are the initials of the artist and cover many walls, buildings and doorways of most cities, but not more recently so than in Madrid.

  • Some of the oldest quarters of Madrid with beautiful buildings and features are now covered in tags and graffiti all over - and are slowly becoming scenes from video games with the MESS SPIRALLING out of control.

  • Graffiti in most cities can be illegal and FINES are issued if the CULPRIT is caught. However like in London the art of Banksy has become popular, making a political statement more than pop art!

  • However in other cities like Barcelona graffiti is looked upon as street art and is displayed and encouraged in some cases by the artist for all to view.

  • You can see from these images that graffiti DEFACES property and is far from artistic but DISRUPTIVE and expensive to clean. Not exactly art is it?
